We all want to be able to achieve that perfect smile. It’s something which we always spend time trying to accomplish in life and it can give us the confidence to go out there and put ourselves out into the world.
If you are looking to achieve a gorgeous white smile during your adulthood and you need a few simple tips, you’ve come to the right place. A great smile isn’t just about getting your teeth bleached or visiting Whitlock Orthodontics to straighten your smile when it’s a little crooked, it is about good oral hygiene and healthy habits. Today we are going to take a look at some of the ways you can maintain a healthy mouth and a great smile this year.
The 2-minute rule
There is a good reason why those music playing toothbrushes exist, and it isn’t just to entertain your child while they brush their teeth in the morning! Every time you come to brush your teeth you should be spending 2 minutes on the job. Make sure that you take the time to really polish every surface you can to collect food debris and tartar to prevent infection, staining, and bad breath. Set a timer on your phone or find a 2-minute long song and entertain yourself as you brush.
Don’t forget to floss
Flossing your teeth is not an optional part of your oral hygiene routine and you need to make sure that you don’t take this for granted! Keeping your teeth free of food and plaque is super important for your oral health and one of the best tools to use for this is floss. If you don’t floss at least once a week you can end up suffering from bad breath and your gums may become inflamed due to bacteria build up.
After you brush your teeth in the morning it is always important to take 30 seconds to swill some mouthwash around your gums and teeth. The reason for this is that brushing your teeth can sometimes miss out bad bacteria and mouthwash will ensure that this bad bacteria is flushed away from your mouth to keep it healthy and fresh. Listerine is one of the best options out there and it can rid your mouth of almost all the bad stuff.
Try Oil Pulling
If you want to try something a little bit different which will protect your mouth and whiten your teeth at the same time, oil pulling is a sure thing. Oil pulling is a method which has been used for hundreds of years to rid the mouth of dirt and to keep it clean, and although its pretty gross it works like a charm. Simply take a spoonful of an oil such as coconut oil and hold it in your mouth, swirling it around for 20 minutes. It may seem like a long time to hold oil in your mouth however it gives the oil chance to pull out any impurities in your mouth and it will leave it feeling super clean. Make sure not to swallow any though!
Avoid brushing after eating
Although we are always taught that brushing our teeth is the most important part of a good routine, there are times we need to avoid it. For example, if you have just eaten a meal or drank something which isn’t water, you should wait for at least half an hour before you brush your teeth. When we eat, our enamel becomes soft and it reacts with our food. If you brush too early, your enamel won’t have time to harden up again and you can brush it away. Make sure to always wait for a while.
